Suicide rear doors were invented to reduce too much weight hanging on the car’s B post. A lot of hot rodders, custom cars and low riders have been using suicide door hinges for their units. Before, producing such doors meant a lot of hard work on the manufacturer’s part. However, new technologies have already been developed, enabling easier installment of suicide hinge doors.

The Benefits of the Suicide Door Hinge Kit

Autoloc began producing kits for suicide door hinges to permit a novice car owner or craftsman to be able to install such a difficult-looking part relatively easy. The kit is able to simplify much of the steps in installing the door hinge, but it still requires some level of knowledge and skill about metal works. You have to take note that installing a suicide door hinge kit involves boring holes and welding pieces. Unless you are adept to such things, then you are not qualified to install the kit.

Installing Your Doors

The steps to installing a suicide door hinge kit should be followed carefully. You must take all warnings and precautions, as well as safety instructions to ensure that you are protected against any harm which the installation may cause you. Another thing you have to take care of is the parts of your car, especially the interiors such as the seats and the carpet. Before conducting any procedure related to the installation, make sure that you cover these parts.

Before you leave your project, make sure that you have instead the door hinges properly and that no part is left unsecured.

With suicide door kits, you can quickly convert any model of car into the functional and stylish design used on rear-hinged car doors. Before choosing this type of kit, you should fully understand the advantages and disadvantages.

Advantages

Because suicide doors open away from the center they are easier to slide into and out of for the vehicles occupants. Drivers of small coupes are turning to suicide for just this reason, using these kits in order to expand room when opening up their rear doors. This has helped suicide doors gain attention from physically disabled individuals looking to remain independent and continue driving themselves.

Price wise suicide door kits are reasonably priced, they are also conveniently located online, making it easy to compare kits and find one that works best with your model of car and your experience with custom installing car doors. Another great feature of suicide kits is their heavy-duty construction. Doors are capable of swinging back at a 90-degree angle and use all-steel construction making them resistant to rust and keeping the hinges working properly each time the door is opened. High-quality kits even come with warranties, offering you some protection in case pieces are missing in your kit or it does not perform as it should.

Disadvantages

The installing of suicide doors, even with a kit is an involved practice. Whoever is using the suicide door kits needs to be experienced in welding and metalworking, as the mount plates will have to be welded to the cars structure. Pivot pins also need to be perfectly aligned or the door may be hard to open or require excessive force to open fully. It can also be more difficult to exit from the front car seat and back car seat at the same time, when regularly hinged car doors are in the front and suicide doors are in the back. A passenger could also get hit by the door, if they are exiting while the vehicle is still moving.

Doors are used by passengers in a vehicle when entering or exiting a car. Though all cars have some sort of door, there are actually more options than you realize. For those looking to trick out their vehicle or just help set their car apart from the rest, there are 7 main types of car doors to choose from, allowing car users to make their cars just as unique as their own personalities.

Conventional Doors: Are the type used on the majority of new vehicles by car manufactures. These doors have hinges on the front edge of the door, and when the doors are open, they swing out from the vehicle.

Suicide Doors: The opposite of conventional car doors, they are hinged on the rear edge of the door, swinging in towards the vehicle.

Scissor Doors: Though these doors have a hinge on the front edge of the door, they then rotate up instead of swinging out. Usually they rotate slightly out before rotating up at 90 degrees.

Butterfly Doors: Very similar to scissor doors but while the doors rotate up the sides of the door also pivot towards the front.

Gull-wing Doors: These doors are hinged from the roof, and the weight for the car doors is squarely on the roof. The name gull-wings refers to the fact that when fully opened the doors give the impression of a seagull in flight.

Sliding Doors: These doors are mounted onto a track and open horizontally. Mainly found on minivans, minibuses and some commercial vans.

Canopy Doors: This car door is pretty rare and seen mainly on concept cars. With a canopy door, the opening is on the top of the car and lifts off in some way. The hinges on these car doors may be in the front, back or either side of the car.

For car enthusiasts, suicide doors are an old trend getting new attention. These types of doors were fairly common during the early half of the 20th century and reached their peak during the 1930s. Now this car style is making a comeback among car lovers who appreciate the retro style and tradition they represent.

What Exactly Are Suicide Doors?

They differ from standard car doors by opening from the center. This simply means that the door hinges are on the trailing edge of the vehicle, the exact opposite side of where you would expect to find these hinges on standard car doors.

This rear-hinged design gives any vehicle a sleek and elegant look. Because they also open away from the center, it is easier to enter and exit from the vehicle. Those with physical disabilities and mobility impairments especially benefit from this design.

Some manufactures sell cars with these types of doors but may have their own name for them. For example, rear-hinged doors on Rolls Royce’s are called coach doors while Mazda calls them freestyle doors.

Safety Innovations

The term suicide doors obviously triggers negative images. In the early half of the 20th century before cars had seat belts and locking mechanism, a worry among car owners was that during travel the unlatched door could become open; leaving anyone leaning against the door no protection from being thrown from the vehicle.

Today’s rear hinged doors are much more efficient and include safety features such as front doors that overlap over the rear hinged doors to prevent accidental opening, and the doors will not open while the car is in motion. Most car doors can also be converted into suicide doors with a kit. Kits include 4 hinges, mounting plates, bolts, and latches.

There are increasingly more and more options when it comes to customizing the car door. The latest trend in the custom car door craze allows you to trick out your ride for awe factor and maximum attention. For guys looking to impress girls, for street racers or girls that just want to have the coolest car accessories, there are several hot trends to choose from.

Lambo Doors

Lambo doors, or vertical doors, are often seen on high-performance vehicles. Unlike traditional car doors, which are hinged to swing away from the car when it is opened, lambo doors are hinged to swing up. This trend is sure to make anyone look like a rapper or celebrity and conversion kits are available – meaning that the custom car door will work on almost any car model. Go with a quality kit to be sure doors don’t require any extra effort to lift and to ensure the hinges don’t fail.

Shaved Door Handles

Door handles mess up the clean lines of the car; with shaved door handle kits, there is no outer handle on your car door. For those with show cars, having shaved door handles will make a car look smoother and gives it a winning appearance. Instead of opening the doors manually, kits include a remote control so the doors and the trunk can be popped open with the press of a button. Some remotes can also operate the gas tank.

Those with cutting and welding experience and tools should be able to get a custom car door with a little trial and error and by carefully following the included instructions. Kits also include a back up button that can be hidden under the vehicle and used to get into the car in case your remote control is ever lost or stops functioning.
